Toronto has opened its first all-digital movie theatre complex, the state-of-the-art facility called "AMC Yonge & Dundas 24", @ Toronto Life Square, on the north-east side of Yonge and Dundas, with 24 theatres split between two floors, clustered around a main lobby with murals celebrating movie stars.From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays, half of the theatres will be used as lecture halls for nearby Ryerson University.
The redevelopment is intended to revitalize the area.
Toronto has followed the lead of New York, with the transformation of Times Square into a tourism and shopping mecca. Urban entertainment centres have also saved specific areas of downtown Los Angeles.In Toronto's AMC complex, part of a multi-use building with retail and restaurants, the theatres range in size from 125 to 456 seats, in a stadium seating setup that has become the industry standard.
AMC says its SXRD 4K digital projectors from Sony will provide images that are four times the resolution of HDTV, with uncompressed and "clear, dynamic, distortion-free audio and lifelike special effects..."
